Feed Mill

The historic old Feed Mill was donated to Farmamerica by a local merchant in 1989.

As larger number of farmers came to this region of Minnesota, a need developed to grind and sell the grain and corn that was grown by local farmers. Feed mills soon became the local marketplace for the farmer to grind, sell, and transport his grain by railroad to urban areas.

The primary purpose of the first feed mills was to grind home grown grains into "grist" to feed the livestock of local farmers.

Early mills were located by streams to take advantage of water power to run the grinding millstones.

The local feed mill also became the place for farmers to purchase seed, livestock feed, medicine, tools, and fertilizers.

As farmers came prosperous they were now able to take the proceeds to benefit their families and sell their grain to feed other families.

Later, Minnesota became a state that contributed greatly to battling world hunger. The farms of the Midwest became known as the "Bread Basket of the World."
