1930 Farm Site
By the 1930s only about 40% of Minnesotans lived on family farms. Farmers were beginning to specialize in growing certain kinds of crops and animals.
With the invention of the gasoline powered tractor, the farmer was able to produce enough food for his family and sell the extra to purchase luxury items for his loved ones. Automobiles and washing machines were a couple of the luxury items that were most sought after in those days.
The Rural Electric Coop brought electricity to Minnesota farms in the late 1930s making farm life much easier. Electric lights, milking machines, running water and NO MORE OUTHOUSES!
The United States of America with its rich soil and mechanized agriculture was now becoming the breadbasket that would feed much of the world.
